Call Outs
Every minute of every day, the men and women of Coastguard Rescue Teams around the country are ready to respond to any emergency that may occur on our coastline. The men and women that make up the Torbay and Berry Head teams are all highly trained volunteers. All team members have their own 'day jobs' and are often called away at short notice, for those not self employed a sympathetic boss is essential. All team members are issued pagers and vhf radios. When a 999 call comes into the Operations Room at Brixham, individual team members can be paged or if necessary the entire team paged in one go. Once paged several team members will be tasked to collect the vehicle from our station, whilst the rest of us will drive to the incident in our own vehicles. Personal protective equipment i.e. boots, overalls, waterproofs and helmets are issued to team members. This equipment is issued for our comfort and safety, it also identifies us to members of the public, especially important when arriving at an incident in our own vehicles. Identity cards are also carried for the same purpose. The incidents we are called upon to attend can be as mundane as collecting details for the operations room to ships running aground or persons trapped on cliff faces. No two incidents are the same and all are treated with the same urgency and professionalism. |
